Statistics and Econometrics

  • Professor Leonard's Statistics Course

    • Recommended for anyone who is fresh new to stats in general. Trust me, it is so far the best basic course one could ever find. I survived my Ph.D. Quantitative Research course hugely thanks to many of Leonard's videos.

  • Econometric Models Course

    • Ever wondering what a "model" is; or what "model" to use for which situation? Then, you cannot miss this course from Dr. Katchova at the Ohio State University.

  • Introduction to Causal Inference from Brady Neal

Text as Data

Below are resources I find particularly useful for social scientists who seek to use quantitative methods to explore text data.

  • My favorite textbook - Text as Data: A New Framework for Machine Learning and the Social Sciences from Grimmer, Roberts and Steward (2022).

    • There is this online course on analyzing political texts using R programming language from Joe Ornstein that perfectly complements the book.

      • Joe Ornstein has this great package in R called promptr that allows us to work with LLMs for text analysis right in R. Check this page.

  • The next favorite textbook - Speech and Language Processing by Jurafsky and Martin.

    • The book can be accessed freely on the website.

    • This is one of the books that Prof. Margaret E Roberts used for her graduate level course which I took at UC San Diego.

  • This is another free and very good book - Supervised Machine Learning for Text Analysis in R by Hvitfeldt and Silge (2022).

    • The book focuses on supervised machine learning techniques, but it does go over basic text processing techniques at the beginning, and deep learning towards the end.

  • There is also this basic level Text as Data course from Professor Chris Bail (Duke University)

    • If you have worked with R before, this course is a good exposure to the some basic quantitative text analysis techniques.
